Jan has always written plays and reviews for the theatre classes she teaches, but writing plays for the public is a new venture. In 2004, she was commissioned by Concrete Theatre to create a piece (Baby Toothed) for their Sprouts Festival of New Plays for Children. That year she also wrote, directed and produced the popular children's show Tales from a Laundry Basket for the Edmonton Fringe. Also in 2004, she was commissioned to write a set of reader's theatre pieces for college course. Currently she is working on a musical for young audiences about an alligator whose passion for the tango gets him into hot water, so to speak. Desperate be like the others in her class, she elists the help of some mythical tooth-gathering characters from a variety of cultural backgrounds. This play weaves a few of these characters into a touching and humorous story of a six year old girl s quest to belong. Instead of washing and drying and folding, these imaginative kids go on pirate adventures, save orphan socks, play a variety of games like Wedgie Tag and Laundry Stomp and generally create more mess than was there at the beginning.
