A Brief History of The Alberta Playwrights'
Network
Alberta Playwrights Network is a provincial organization
of emerging and established playwrights and supporters of
playwrighting. The society was incorporated in 1985, but there
has been a playwrights group in Alberta for over 25 years.
Our members come from across the province, in both rural
and urban communities, with the largest portion of our membership
residing in Calgary and Edmonton. With offices and representatives
in both Calgary and Edmonton, playwrighting circles in Edmonton,
Calgary and Lethbridge, and portable programs available to
anyone in the province, we strive to be a truly province-wide
organization. We believe that APN enriches the lives and increases
opportunities for all Albertans.
Over the past two years APN has initiated an ambitious expansion,
providing more programs, an expanded annual conference and
professional development program for playwrighting, while
expanding the geographical scope of our programs.
The 2001 / 2002 season marks further
changes, with a new Executive Director, Ken Cameron, a new board elected at
our January AGM, new community partnerships, new office equipment
and marketing & fundraising strategy/materials. We are
expanding our presence in Edmonton and Northern Alberta
with more programs and activities in Edmonton, and in Southern
Alberta with a playwrighting circle based out of the University
of Lethbridge and Flying Scribe consultations.
We are looking forward to the future, as a renewed board
and dedicated membership steer us to work harder and more
creatively towards fully serving all of Alberta.
