Executive Director
Salary: $45,000-$50,000
Position Summary:
The Executive Director (ED) is APN’s chief executive, responsible for leading the organization with vision, strategy, and operational excellence. Reporting to the Board of Directors, the ED ensures APN remains responsive, sustainable, and aligned with its mission to support Alberta’s playwrights. The ideal candidate for this position will be a passionate advocate for the arts, an experienced administrator, and a relationship-builder.
This is a flexible (30-35 hours/week) remote role based in the Calgary or Edmonton area, with occasional travel across the province for programming and outreach.
Key Responsibilities:
The core responsibilities of this role include, but are not limited to, the following:
Leadership and Strategy
Collaborate with the Board to shape and execute strategic plans.
Conduct environmental scans to identify pertinent internal and external trends.
Help evolve APN’s vision and develop programs that reflect it.
Support and promote equity, diversity, and inclusion throughout the organization.
Represent APN in provincial and national arts communities.
Program Development and Artist Support:
Lead the design, delivery, and evaluation of APN’s programs.
Ensure programming meets the needs of both emerging and established playwrights, in urban and rural settings.
Build and maintain relationships with playwrights, theatres, and arts organizations across Canada.
Operations and Human Resources:
Oversee daily operations, including administration and HR.
Hire, supervise, and support staff and volunteers.
Ensure compliance with employment standards and Board policies.
Maintain clear internal communication and accurate records for the organization.
Financial Management:
Manage budgeting, financial reporting, and fiscal oversight with support from the Treasurer.
Maintain sound bookkeeping practices; ensure activities are compliant with pertinent regulations and are conducted in accordance with Board-approved budgets.
Lead fundraising efforts including grants, sponsorships, and donor relations.
Governance and Compliance:
Administer day-to-day operations and ensure alignment with Board policies.
Provide timely reports to the Board, including monthly updates and quarterly financials.
Participate in annual performance reviews and strategic planning sessions.
Communications and Outreach:
Serve as APN’s public representative at events in the media.
Oversee newsletters, social media, and promotional materials.
Cultivate partnerships and positive relationships with the Board, funders, stakeholders, and community members.
Lead membership recruitment and engagement campaigns.

Qualifications:
Knowledge of and passion for Canadian theatre with a creative spirit.
Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
A self-motivated and pragmatic attitude with a passion for creative expression.
Experience in fundraising, budgeting, and/ or grant writing is an asset.
Previous experience as a playwright or in play development is considered a strong asset.
Demonstrated leadership experience in the arts or nonprofit sector is also an asset.
*Note: The successful candidate must complete and pass a Calgary Police records check.

Call for Board Members
Want to have a big impact on the arts in Alberta? Alberta Playwrights' Network is a not-for-profit provincial organization of emerging and established playwrights, dramaturgs, and supporters of storytelling in all its forms. APN is currently looking for volunteer Board Members, including a Treasurer, to join our team. We are especially looking for representation in Northern Alberta.
DUTIES WILL INCLUDE:
o Attend and participate in monthly board meetings
o Review the agenda, minutes, reports and budgets to prepare for meetings
o Question budgetary or report inconsistencies to ensure strong financial oversight
o Volunteer time (as available) for events, outreach, and fundraising efforts
o Learn APN’s mission, policies, programs, and needs to ensure they are fulfilled
o Offer ideas that will help us move forward with our goals
o Evaluate the performance of executive leadership
o Participate in strategic and organizational planning
WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR:

o Community organizers willing to engage their peers, and/or,
